Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Repairs

Your air conditioning system rarely quits without warning. Often, it provides subtle or even obvious signals that a problem is developing before a complete system breakdown leaves you without cool air. Catching and acting on these signs early can help you avoid more extensive and costly damage.

We encourage you to schedule repairs if you notice any of the following signs of AC trouble:

  • Warm air blowing out. If your AC is running but the air coming through the vents doesn't feel cool, you obviously have a problem. This could point to a low refrigerant level, a bad compressor, or a faulty component that requires professional diagnosis and repair.
  • Weak airflow. When air barely trickles from the vents, your unit is struggling to cool your space effectively. This could be due to issues with the fan motor, blocked ductwork, or a dirty filter. We can check your entire system and make the appropriate adjustments to restore proper circulation.
  • Strange noises. Listen for grinding, squealing, or scraping sounds coming from your AC unit. These noises usually mean a mechanical part, like a bearing or motor, is failing. Addressing these sounds quickly helps prevent further damage.

How Regular Maintenance Can Help Avoid AC Issues

Investing in regular AC maintenance dramatically reduces the risk of expensive emergency repairs. We typically recommend annual inspections and tune-ups.

When our technicians catch and fix minor issues like a failing capacitor or a clogged drain line during a routine inspection, we can prevent that small component failure from triggering a catastrophic breakdown of a major part, such as the compressor. A compressor replacement alone can cost over a thousand dollars, far more than the price of a yearly tune-up. By keeping all AC parts clean, calibrated, and working together smoothly, we can help you maximize your equipment’s performance and minimize the chances of waking up to a completely broken system.

  • With a multi-zone ductless heat pump, you can connect multiple indoor air handlers—often up to eight—to heat and cool different rooms independently.

  • A ductless heat pump works by moving heat, not creating it. In the summer, it pulls heat out of your home to keep you cool. In the winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air—even when it’s cold—and brings it inside. Each indoor unit controls the temperature of its own room, providing efficient, quiet comfort without ductwork.

  • You should never have to add refrigerant (Freon) to your central air conditioning system, unless there is a leak in the system.

If your system has a leak, a service technician should never be "topping it off" with refrigerant. The system needs to be leak tested and the leak needs to be repaired.

A refrigerant leak WILL harm the compressor, cause the system to draw more electricity, provide inadequate cooling and/or heating if it is a heat pump.

Many refrigerants are being banned due to the ozone depleting chemicals. That is another reason that ALL refrigerant leaks need to be repaired and not topped off with more refrigerant.

Refrigerant repairs on older central air conditioning systems can get costly, so you may be better off replacing your system.

  • YES THEY DO!

Years ago heat pumps only worked well in warmer climates, such as Florida or the Southern California.

New technology has made heat pumps one of the most efficient source to heat and cool your home anywhere in the United States.

Heat Pumps are being installed in many homes all over Connecticut, Maine, Mass, Vermont and Rhode Island.

ALL of the home owners are writing rave reviews about their energy savings and comfort they are getting from their new heat pump systems.

Tips for Keeping Cool When Your AC Fails

When your air conditioning system unexpectedly breaks down on a hot day, you need immediate relief. Our team at Air Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning is available on weekends and provides same-day support, so we can work to get to you quickly to get your AC back up and running. While you wait for one of our technicians to arrive, there are several things you can do to maintain comfort and manage the heat indoors.

If your AC stops working, we encourage you to:

  • Block the sunlight. Close your blinds, curtains, and shutters, especially on windows facing the sun. Direct sunlight creates the most intense heat gain, so blocking it can dramatically lower the temperature inside.
  • Use fans. Set up oscillating fans or box fans to create air movement. Direct fans toward you to create a cooling breeze.
  • Limit the use of heat-generating appliances. Avoid running your oven, stove, clothes dryer, or dishwasher. These appliances release significant heat into your indoor air. Consider preparing cold meals, using a microwave, or grilling outdoors.
  • Take cool showers or baths. If it is already hot inside, a quick, cool rinse can lower your body temperature immediately. You can also use a cold, damp washcloth for quick relief.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Dehydration happens quickly in high heat and prevents your body from regulating its temperature effectively.
  • Wear light, loose clothing. Choose lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton.
  • Move to the lowest level. Since heat rises, the lower levels of a building are often significantly cooler. If you live in a multi-story home, spend time in your basement or on the first floor.
