How Does a Heat Pump Work?
Heat pumps move heat instead of generating it with fuel, making them a highly efficient option for year-round comfort. They can be air-source (gathering heat from outside air) or ground-source (using heat from the ground).
In heating mode, your system extracts heat from the air or ground and distributes it throughout your home. In cooling mode, it works in reverse by pulling heat from inside your home and releasing it outdoors.
Our friendly professionals can help you choose the right heat pump system, handle professional sizing and installation, and provide guidance on operation and maintenance to keep your household comfortable in every season.
Do Heat Pumps Provide Heating & Air Conditioning?
Absolutely. Heat pumps are dual systems that provide both heating and cooling, making them a versatile and convenient option for whole-home comfort. We offer a broad selection of heat pumps from industry-leading brands like Carrier®, Daiken®, and Mitsubishi Electric®, giving you peace of mind that your new system is built to last.
Do Heat Pumps Perform Well in Connecticut’s Climate?
Heat pumps can be a great choice for Connecticut’s climate when properly selected and installed. Modern cold-climate heat pumps are typically best for New England homeowners because they perform efficiently even during freezing temperatures, making them a reliable choice for our long, snowy winters.
When Should I Call a Heat Pump Repair Technician?
Here are some telltale signs it’s time to contact our heat pump repair technicians:
- Weak airflow
- Frequent cycling
- Ice buildup on coils
- High indoor humidity
- Foul, musty, or burning odors
- Inconsistent heating or cooling
- Grinding, rattling, squealing, or hissing sounds
- Increased energy bills without increased usage
If you suspect a heat pump issue, don’t wait for it to get worse. Day or night, rain or shine, our team is available 24/7 for all your heat pump emergencies.

With a multi-zone ductless heat pump, you can connect multiple indoor air handlers—often up to eight—to heat and cool different rooms independently.
-
A ductless heat pump works by moving heat, not creating it. In the summer, it pulls heat out of your home to keep you cool. In the winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air—even when it’s cold—and brings it inside. Each indoor unit controls the temperature of its own room, providing efficient, quiet comfort without ductwork.

You should never have to add refrigerant (Freon) to your central air conditioning system, unless there is a leak in the system.
If your system has a leak, a service technician should never be "topping it off" with refrigerant. The system needs to be leak tested and the leak needs to be repaired.
A refrigerant leak WILL harm the compressor, cause the system to draw more electricity, provide inadequate cooling and/or heating if it is a heat pump.
Many refrigerants are being banned due to the ozone depleting chemicals. That is another reason that ALL refrigerant leaks need to be repaired and not topped off with more refrigerant.
Refrigerant repairs on older central air conditioning systems can get costly, so you may be better off replacing your system.
If you have any questions about your central air conditioning system, contact our office!

Do Heat Pumps Need Regular Maintenance?
Yes. Like any system, your heat pump needs regular TLC to operate at its best. Preventive maintenance not only improves efficiency and comfort, but also extends the lifespan of your equipment.
We recommend scheduling heat pump maintenance at least twice a year, ideally in the spring and fall before the peak seasonal demands. Our experts can inspect, clean, and optimize your unit to reduce breakdowns and keep your system in top condition.
How Long Do Heat Pumps Last?
The lifespan of a heat pump depends on the model, installation quality, maintenance frequency, and usage. Most heat pumps last 10-20 years with regular service and tune-ups. Our technicians are NATE® certified and stay current with the latest industry advancements to make sure your new system is correctly sized and installed.
Can Heat Pumps Work with Smart Thermostats?
Yes. Most modern heat pumps are compatible with smart thermostats. We can help you select a model that is compatible with your smart system and integrate it with your existing setup for precise temperature control and energy savings.
