Optimize Your HVAC Performance With Precision Thermostat Calibrations
Are you tired of fiddling with your aging thermostat? A modern digital, automatic, and fully programmable thermostat can make managing your indoor home comfort easier than ever. It can also provide more reliable performance and significant energy savings over time.
At Air Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning, we can help you explore the latest models and find a solution that suits your specific needs and preferences. Our licensed and insured HVAC technicians can complete a seamless installation that integrates your new thermostat with your heating and cooling systems. We can also walk you through how to make the most of your new thermostat. With over 30 years of experience serving our community and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (including zero complaints since 2000), you can expect honest communication, quality workmanship, and peace of mind.
When we recommend new thermostat equipment, we also look at how your whole home in Branford responds to temperature changes, including insulation levels, window exposure, and how different rooms tend to heat or cool. This whole-home perspective helps ensure that your thermostat settings match the real conditions in your living spaces, not just a single hallway or entryway where the device may be mounted. Because Connecticut winters can be cold and summers humid, choosing a thermostat with the right features for your lifestyle can make a real difference in comfort and energy use throughout the year.
Take full command of your home’s comfort and efficiency by upgrading to a modern smart thermostat installed by our certified technicians. Contact us at (203) 871-0801 or fill out our online form.
Signs Your Thermostat Needs Professional Attention
Just like any component of your HVAC system, your thermostat will eventually experience wear and tear or even operational glitches. When this happens, it may stop accurately communicating with your furnace or air conditioner, leading to discomfort and wasted energy.
Reach out to our technicians to schedule a free inspection if you notice any of the following problems with your thermostat:
- Inconsistent temperature readings. If your home feels much warmer or colder than the temperature displayed on the thermostat, the internal sensor has probably failed or requires recalibration.
- HVAC system constantly cycles. Your thermostat should never turn your furnace or air conditioner on and off in rapid succession. This frequent starting and stopping, known as short cycling, strains your equipment and wastes energy.
- Total power loss or blank screen. If your digital thermostat screen suddenly goes blank or fails to respond, it might indicate a wiring issue, a tripped breaker, or simply dead batteries. If new batteries or resetting the breaker do not fix it, we need to inspect the wiring.
- Programs fail to hold. If you program a set schedule but your thermostat reverts to a default setting or ignores the schedule altogether, you may be dealing with an internal electronic failure.
- The system does not respond to changes. There is likely a communication breakdown between your thermostat and your HVAC equipment if your heating or cooling systems fail to react when you manually adjust the temperature.
- Visible damage. Older mechanical thermostats with visible rust, cracks, or discoloration are likely past their prime and should be replaced.
If you notice strange behavior, do not ignore it. We can quickly diagnose the issue, perform the necessary repairs, or recommend an upgrade if your thermostat is nearing the end of its expected service life.

How Can a Programmable Thermostat Save Me Money?
A traditional mechanical thermostat uses a simple bimetallic strip or a mercury switch to sense the room temperature and switch your HVAC system on or off. However, it only maintains one setting until you manually change it.
A programmable thermostat, by contrast, uses electronic sensors to measure temperature with greater accuracy and contains a microprocessor that allows you to schedule multiple temperature settings throughout the day and week. You input your desired settings, and the thermostat executes them automatically. For example, during the winter, you may program warmer temperatures for when you usually wake up, cooler temperatures while you are away at work, and back to comfortable temperatures when you return home.
Many homeowners in Branford and the surrounding shoreline communities find that programmable models are especially helpful during the shoulder seasons, when outdoor temperatures can change quickly from cool mornings to warm afternoons. Instead of constantly adjusting the thermostat as the weather shifts, you can create a schedule that tracks your typical routine and lets the equipment do the work. This automatic adjustment supports better comfort in bedrooms, living areas, and finished basements without requiring you to remember every temperature change throughout the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Does It Take to Install a Programmable Thermostat?
For a standard swap, where your home’s wiring is already compatible with the new programmable thermostat, we can typically complete the entire job in about one hour. The replacement process may take a bit longer if the installation requires additional wiring or modifications to your HVAC system.
This timeline includes safely powering down your system, neatly disconnecting and removing the old thermostat, mounting the new digital base plate, wiring the new unit, and securing the faceplate. Our team at Air Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning can handle everything efficiently so you can get back to your day with minimal interruption.
How Do I Know If My Thermostat Is Broken Or If The Issue Is With My HVAC System?
If your HVAC system fails to turn on or won't stop running, the thermostat is often the first component to investigate. You can check for a faulty thermostat by looking for a blank display or unresponsive buttons, which suggest a power loss or internal circuitry failure. Another sign of a broken thermostat is when the actual room temperature significantly differs from the setting on the screen. A professional technician can perform a jump test on the wiring to confirm if the thermostat is the culprit or if the problem lies deeper within the furnace or air conditioner.
Are Smart Thermostats Compatible With Older Heating And Cooling Systems?
Most modern smart thermostats are backward-compatible with a wide range of older 24-volt HVAC systems. However, older units may lack a common wire, or C-wire, which is required to provide continuous power to the smart device's Wi-Fi and color display. In these cases, a technician can often install a power extender kit or pull a new wire to make the upgrade possible. It is important to verify that your specific system isn't a high-voltage or millivolt system, as these require specialized adapters to work with smart technology.
Do I Need A Professional To Install A Smart Thermostat, Or Can I Do It Myself?
While many smart thermostats are marketed as DIY-friendly, professional installation ensures that the wiring is handled safely and that your HVAC system remains protected from short circuits. A professional will verify that the thermostat is installed in an optimal location, away from drafts and direct sunlight, for the most accurate temperature readings. They can also handle the complex configuration of multi-stage heating or cooling settings that are often overlooked during a self-installation. Additionally, expert setup ensures your Wi-Fi connection and mobile app integration work perfectly from the moment the device is powered on.
How Often Should I Calibrate Or Replace My Thermostat To Ensure Peak Efficiency?
You should have your thermostat’s calibration checked during your annual HVAC maintenance visits to ensure it is accurately communicating with your equipment. Most high-quality thermostats have a functional lifespan of about ten years before the sensors or internal components begin to lose their precision. If you notice your system cycling more frequently or failing to keep you comfortable, it may be time for a replacement. Upgrading to a newer model every decade also allows you to take advantage of the latest energy-saving algorithms and remote-access features that older models lack.

With a multi-zone ductless heat pump, you can connect multiple indoor air handlers—often up to eight—to heat and cool different rooms independently.
-
A ductless heat pump works by moving heat, not creating it. In the summer, it pulls heat out of your home to keep you cool. In the winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air—even when it’s cold—and brings it inside. Each indoor unit controls the temperature of its own room, providing efficient, quiet comfort without ductwork.

You should never have to add refrigerant (Freon) to your central air conditioning system, unless there is a leak in the system.
If your system has a leak, a service technician should never be "topping it off" with refrigerant. The system needs to be leak tested and the leak needs to be repaired.
A refrigerant leak WILL harm the compressor, cause the system to draw more electricity, provide inadequate cooling and/or heating if it is a heat pump.
Many refrigerants are being banned due to the ozone depleting chemicals. That is another reason that ALL refrigerant leaks need to be repaired and not topped off with more refrigerant.
Refrigerant repairs on older central air conditioning systems can get costly, so you may be better off replacing your system.
