What 5 Qualifications Are Required To Excel In The HVAC Profession?

1. Clean Up Your Act

First impressions last forever…
That means your uniform should be clean, you should be neatly shaven, you should be free of body odors and you may want to carry some breath mints with you before meeting the customer.
Your vehicle should also be clean, inside and out.
It is a fact; a clean, organized person is more productive and has less stress than a messy person.

2. Don’t Be a Hater

Some people hate their job, their boss, their co-workers and they even hate the customers.
If you’re one of those people who only go to work for the money and benefits, QUIT! Your job becomes easier and less stressful when you like what you do and who you work with.
An HVAC career can be a very lucrative and rewarding job, if you like what you do. Don’t Worry… Be Happy!

3. Jack of All Trades

There is a lot to know when it comes to the HVAC trade. We have to know everything from refrigerant pressures to threading a pipe and everything in between.
Strong troubleshooting skills are one of the characteristics that separate a mediocre technician from a great technician.
You need to understand how things works before you can claim to be a great troubleshooter.
Great HVAC service technicians, installers and sales consultants will continuously educate themselves on all aspects of the trade.

4. Is The Customer Always Right?

Everyone in an HVAC contracting business must be patient with customers. When a customer calls, they are usually in distress due to a heating or air conditioning breakdown or even worse, a water leak.
Be compassionate!
Everyone in the company must be able to speak, in simple terms, to those who may not be so familiar with HVAC terms.
And of course, the customer is always right!

5. Better Late Than Never

Have you ever had to meet friends for dinner or a co-worker for an important business meeting and they show up late? It’s an uncomfortable feeling, like they are disrespecting your time. Your fellow employees, boss and customers feel the same way if you are late. Being on time really means being five to ten minutes early. That shows that you respect other peoples time and it usually makes you feel better as well. Maybe you can get other things done if you show up a little earlier, such as paperwork, talk about things that happened the day before, ask for a raise, etc. There is an old saying: “The early bird catches the worm”.

The best part of this job is helping people stay comfortable while helping them save money on energy costs.
