Q&A

Air Inc. Heating and Air Conditioning Q&A

Can a Ductless Heat Pump be used as a primary heating source?

Yes and No...

Ductless Heat Pumps will heat your home even when the temperature outside drops below 0 degrees.

All of the Ductless manufactures recommend having a secondary heat source (Furnace, Boiler or Electric).

I personally use only a Ductless Heat Pump in my recording studio. I never had a problem keeping that room warm, even when it was -5 degrees outside.

Do Heat Pumps work in Connecticut?

YES THEY DO!

Years ago heat pumps only worked well in warmer climates, such as Florida or the Southern California.

New technology has made heat pumps one of the most efficient source to heat and cool your home anywhere in the United States.

Heat Pumps are being installed in many homes all over Connecticut, Maine, Mass, Vermont and Rhode Island.

ALL of the home owners are writing rave reviews about their energy savings and comfort they are getting from their new heat pump systems.

Do I Need to Charge Up My Central Air Conditioning Every Year?

You should never have to add refrigerant (Freon) to your central air conditioning system, unless there is a leak in the system.

If your system has a leak, a service technician should never be "topping it off" with refrigerant. The system needs to be leak tested and the leak needs to be repaired.

A refrigerant leak WILL harm the compressor, cause the system to draw more electricity, provide inadequate cooling and/or heating if it is a heat pump.

Many refrigerants are being banned due to the ozone depleting chemicals. That is another reason that ALL refrigerant leaks need to be repaired and not topped off with more refrigerant.

Refrigerant repairs on older central air conditioning systems can get costly, so you may be better off replacing your system.

Is Ductless Air Conditioning being phased out?

Yes it is. Mitsubishi, Daikin, Carrier and all other manufactures are phasing out the manufacturing of Ductless Air Conditioning ONLY stems. They are being replaced by high efficiency Ductless Heat Pumps, which provide both air conditioning and heating.

It doesn't make economic sense for the manufactures to rearrange an assembly line to make cooling only units, when there is very little cost difference from the manufacturing process of a heat pump.

Is R-22 (the refrigerant in your older AC/Heat pump) REALLY being phased out by the EPA?

The answer is YES

The US Environmental Protection Agency states that R-22 refrigerant  will become ILLEGAL in January 2020. The SKYROCKETING prices of R-22 will empty your pockets and are making repair parts OBSOLETE. After January 2020, when R-22 becomes OFFICIALLY illegal, that leaky old system you have been putting R-22 in every year(which we DO NOT RECOMMEND for environmental safety)barely making it through every Summer with, will be null and void. Do yourself and the environment a favor, and switch to a new 410-A system before the summer heat!

Should I Repair or Replace my Furnace?

When a furnace reaches the age of 15+ years, it is usually time to replace it. Higher efficiency furnaces are available and that alone will offset your heating cost to justify the expense of replacement.

Repairing a furnace, that is 10 years or younger, makes sense in most cases.
