Heat Pump Installation & Repair for Hamden’s Older Homes

We install, repair, and maintain heat pump systems for residential customers throughout Hamden. As a certified Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor, we have particular experience with ductless mini-split systems. A large share of Hamden’s housing stock predates modern ductwork, and ductless systems let those homeowners add efficient heating and cooling without tearing into walls or running new ducts.

We size each project to the home. Single-zone systems work well for a sunroom addition or a finished basement; multi-zone setups extend comfort throughout a whole house from a single outdoor unit. We carry heat pumps from Carrier, Daikin, and Mitsubishi Electric, giving us the flexibility to match the right equipment to your home’s layout and budget.

Do Heat Pumps Work in Connecticut Winters?

It’s a fair question. Older heat pump technology struggled once outdoor temperatures dropped well below freezing, and that reputation has stuck. Modern cold-climate heat pumps are built differently. They extract usable heat from outdoor air even when temperatures dip into the single digits, making them a reliable heating source for New England homes. The same system reverses direction in summer to cool your home, replacing a furnace and central air system with a single, more efficient unit.

Heat Pump Water Heaters in Hamden

Heat pump technology isn’t limited to home comfort systems. Heat pump water heaters, sometimes called hybrid water heaters, apply the same heat-transfer principle to domestic hot water: instead of generating heat directly with a resistance element, they pull heat from surrounding air and use it to warm the water in the tank. A backup electric resistance element handles periods of unusually high demand. ENERGY STAR certified models can use up to 70% less energy than standard electric water heaters, which can add up to meaningful savings on utility bills over the life of the unit.

Air Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning provides water heater installation, repair, and maintenance as part of our full HVAC service offering. If your current electric water heater is aging out, a heat pump water heater is worth discussing before you replace it with the same technology.

  • With a multi-zone ductless heat pump, you can connect multiple indoor air handlers—often up to eight—to heat and cool different rooms independently.

  • A ductless heat pump works by moving heat, not creating it. In the summer, it pulls heat out of your home to keep you cool. In the winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air—even when it’s cold—and brings it inside. Each indoor unit controls the temperature of its own room, providing efficient, quiet comfort without ductwork.

  • You should never have to add refrigerant (Freon) to your central air conditioning system, unless there is a leak in the system.

If your system has a leak, a service technician should never be "topping it off" with refrigerant. The system needs to be leak tested and the leak needs to be repaired.

A refrigerant leak WILL harm the compressor, cause the system to draw more electricity, provide inadequate cooling and/or heating if it is a heat pump.

Many refrigerants are being banned due to the ozone depleting chemicals. That is another reason that ALL refrigerant leaks need to be repaired and not topped off with more refrigerant.

Refrigerant repairs on older central air conditioning systems can get costly, so you may be better off replacing your system.
