How a Ductless Mini-Split System Works

A ductless mini-split connects an outdoor compressor to one or more indoor air handlers through a small refrigerant line set. Installation requires only a two- to three-inch wall penetration, leaving your home’s structure intact. Because there are no ducts, you also avoid the energy losses that plague ducted systems. ENERGY STAR estimates that 20 to 30 percent of conditioned air in a typical ducted home escapes through leaks and poorly connected ducts before it ever reaches a room.

Inverter-driven compressors are what give ductless systems their efficiency edge. Instead of cycling fully on and off, an inverter compressor adjusts its speed to match the actual heating or cooling load, reducing both energy use and temperature swings. Each indoor air handler holds its own temperature setting, so you get true zoned comfort control room by room. Cold-climate heat pump models extend that efficiency further by extracting usable heat from outdoor air even when temperatures drop below freezing, making them a practical year-round heating source in Connecticut.

Energize CT Rebates & Smart-E Loan Financing

Connecticut homeowners installing a qualifying ductless heat pump may be eligible for Energize CT rebates. The standard tier offers $250 per ton, while the Energy Optimization tier provides up to $1,000 per ton (up to $10,000 combined) for projects replacing fossil-fuel or electric-resistance heat. Eligibility and tier qualification depend on your specific project and equipment, and rebates require using a contractor participating in the Energize CT Heat Pump Installer Network.

The Connecticut Green Bank’s Smart-E Loan program offers low-interest financing for qualifying heat pump installations. We also offer our own financing options. Ask about both when you call for your free estimate.

Is a Ductless System Right for Your Home?

Homes Without Ductwork
The clearest candidates. If your home was built without central air, adding a ductless system avoids the cost and disruption of installing an entire duct network.

Additions, Finished Basements, Converted Attics & Sunrooms
These spaces often sit outside the reach of the main HVAC system. A single-zone ductless unit solves the problem without modifying existing equipment.

Persistent Hot or Cold Rooms
Rooms your current system can’t balance are a common reason homeowners add a ductless zone. Zoned comfort control lets you dial in each space independently rather than fighting the thermostat.

Homes Transitioning Away from Oil or Propane
Fuel-based systems can be replaced with a cold-climate heat pump, often qualifying for the Energize CT rebates described above.

Ductless System Maintenance & Lifespan

A well-maintained ductless mini-split typically lasts 12 to 20 years. Routine maintenance includes cleaning the filters, inspecting refrigerant lines, and clearing the condensate drain line. That last task matters more in Connecticut than in drier climates. The region’s humidity makes condensate drains prone to clogging, and a blocked line can cause water damage to walls and ceilings. An annual checkup catches the problem before it becomes expensive.

You should never have to add refrigerant (Freon) to your central air conditioning system, unless there is a leak in the system.
If your system has a leak, a service technician should never be "topping it off" with refrigerant. The system needs to be leak tested and the leak needs to be repaired.
A refrigerant leak WILL harm the compressor, cause the system to draw more electricity, provide inadequate cooling and/or heating if it is a heat pump.
Many refrigerants are being banned due to the ozone depleting chemicals. That is another reason that ALL refrigerant leaks need to be repaired and not topped off with more refrigerant.
Refrigerant repairs on older central air conditioning systems can get costly, so you may be better off replacing your system.
