Why New Haven Homes Are Built for Ductless

More than 40 percent of New Haven’s housing stock was built before 1939. Duplexes and converted apartments make up nearly 41 percent of occupied units, while single-family detached homes account for fewer than 20 percent. Triple-deckers fill the Hill, Newhallville, Dixwell, Dwight, and Fair Haven neighborhoods. Historic districts in East Rock, Wooster Square, and Westville Village add another layer of older homes where retrofitting central ductwork simply isn’t practical.

Ductless mini-split systems are a natural fit for this housing stock. They deliver zoned comfort without tearing into plaster walls or sacrificing closet space to duct chases.

Indoor Air Handler Options for Every Room

The right air handler depends on your room layout, ceiling height, and aesthetic preferences. We offer four configurations to match almost any space.

Wall-Mounted Units
The most common choice, mounted high on the wall for even air distribution with minimal footprint.

Floor-Mounted Units
Ideal for rooms with limited wall space or low ceilings, sitting just above baseboard height.

Ceiling-Cassette Units
Recessed into the ceiling for a low-profile look; well-suited to finished basements and open-plan rooms.

Low-Static & Multi-Position Units
Connect to short duct runs where some air distribution is needed without a full central system.

Ductless systems can also work alongside an existing HVAC setup, adding coverage to rooms the primary system doesn’t reach well.

Is a Ductless System Right for Your Home?

These are the situations where a ductless mini-split installation makes the most sense:

Homes Without Ductwork
The clearest candidates. If your home was built without central air, adding a ductless system avoids the cost and disruption of installing an entire duct network.

Additions, Finished Basements, Converted Attics & Sunrooms
These spaces often sit outside the reach of the main HVAC system. A single-zone ductless unit solves the problem without modifying existing equipment.

Persistent Hot or Cold Rooms
Rooms your current system can’t balance are a common reason homeowners add a ductless zone. Zoned comfort control lets you dial in each space independently rather than fighting the thermostat.

Homes Transitioning Away from Oil or Propane
Fuel-based systems can be replaced with a cold-climate heat pump, often qualifying for the Energize CT rebates described above.

  • With a multi-zone ductless heat pump, you can connect multiple indoor air handlers—often up to eight—to heat and cool different rooms independently.

  • A ductless heat pump works by moving heat, not creating it. In the summer, it pulls heat out of your home to keep you cool. In the winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air—even when it’s cold—and brings it inside. Each indoor unit controls the temperature of its own room, providing efficient, quiet comfort without ductwork.

  • You should never have to add refrigerant (Freon) to your central air conditioning system, unless there is a leak in the system.

If your system has a leak, a service technician should never be "topping it off" with refrigerant. The system needs to be leak tested and the leak needs to be repaired.

A refrigerant leak WILL harm the compressor, cause the system to draw more electricity, provide inadequate cooling and/or heating if it is a heat pump.

Many refrigerants are being banned due to the ozone depleting chemicals. That is another reason that ALL refrigerant leaks need to be repaired and not topped off with more refrigerant.

Refrigerant repairs on older central air conditioning systems can get costly, so you may be better off replacing your system.

  • YES THEY DO!

Years ago heat pumps only worked well in warmer climates, such as Florida or the Southern California.

New technology has made heat pumps one of the most efficient source to heat and cool your home anywhere in the United States.

Heat Pumps are being installed in many homes all over Connecticut, Maine, Mass, Vermont and Rhode Island.

ALL of the home owners are writing rave reviews about their energy savings and comfort they are getting from their new heat pump systems.
